British adventurer Richard Burton awakens after death in an alien land (prominently featureing a vast river), where he encounters others in the same situation. He finds a mysterious stranger who tells Burton to head toward the headwaters of the river.
Samuel Clemens is contacted by a mysterious stranger who tells him he can find metal to build a riverboat further up the river. He also encounters his wife, now in the company of Cyrano De Bergerac.
Burton continues to travel up river. Another resurrectee, Peter Frigate, meets up with others also contacted by a mysterious stranger and told to head up-river. De Bergerac assists in the building of a dirigible.
Several travelers make it to a giant lake near the head of the river.
